This vintage Ritz Space Age wall clock captures the bold graphic experimentation of Italian design at the turn of the 1970s. Its rounded cream-coloured case frames a dark dial animated by oversized ochre numerals, circular hour markers and sharply contrasting white hands. The result is an object that feels as much like a piece of graphic art as a functional timepiece.
The most distinctive feature is the unusual treatment of the numerals. Rather than following a conventional clock face, the numbers 12, 3, 6 and 9 become large, almost abstract graphic elements. Their playful shapes and warm ochre colour stand out against the deep brown background, creating a striking visual rhythm that recalls the typography and visual culture of the late 1960s and 1970s.
The circular plastic case adds another layer to the composition. Its gently projecting profile, warm cream finish and narrow chrome trim give the clock a sculptural quality, while the relatively deep construction creates a subtle sense of volume when viewed from the side. The contrast between the soft curves of the case and the graphic precision of the dial is particularly characteristic of Space Age design.
Ritz, associated with the Italian manufacturer Ritz-Italora, produced a variety of distinctive clocks during a period of considerable experimentation in domestic accessories. Plastic housings, unconventional proportions and bold colour combinations offered designers new opportunities to reinterpret familiar household objects through a modern visual language.
The reverse retains the original Ritz price label, marked 13,500 Italian lire, together with Italian operating instructions. These surviving details provide an appealing connection to the object’s original retail history. The clock is now fitted with a replacement battery-operated movement.
With its sculptural circular case, unusual typography and restrained but distinctive colour palette, this Ritz wall clock is a compelling example of Italian Space Age design, equally suited to a kitchen, living room, studio or a collection of vintage graphic objects.
