Designed by Luigi Massoni for Guzzini in the 1970s, the Fazzoletto is a distinctive example of Italian Space Age design and of the experimental use of plastics that transformed domestic objects during the period. Its name — fazzoletto, Italian for handkerchief — perfectly describes a form in which rigid material appears to fold, curl and overlap like a piece of soft fabric.
This grey Space Age vase is crafted from translucent light grey PMMA, a particularly subtle interpretation of the design. Light passes through the overlapping surfaces and accentuates the sweeping folds, creating shifting degrees of transparency and shadow while preserving the clarity of Massoni’s sculptural form.
This compact version has a more intimate presence than the larger Fazzoletto variants. Its restrained grey palette also gives the object an unusually versatile character: the expressive geometry remains unmistakably rooted in 1970s plastic design, while the neutral translucent finish allows it to sit naturally within contemporary interiors.
The Fazzoletto is documented in L’Utopie du tout plastique, an important reference on the radical culture of plastic design that developed during the 1960s and 1970s. Its inclusion reflects the significance of a period in which synthetic materials were embraced not simply as substitutes for traditional ones, but as a means of exploring transparency, colour and entirely new forms.
Preserved in excellent vintage condition, this example shows only minor superficial scuffs consistent with age. Its compact scale, unusual light grey colour and fluid silhouette make it a particularly refined interpretation of Massoni’s celebrated design.
