DESIGN CONTEXT

The Oxar spring lamp designed by Philippe Rogier is one of the most distinctive expressions of French Space Age lighting from the 1970s. Rather than concealing its structure, the design celebrates it: a continuous chromed metal spring expands around the light source, transforming a simple bulb into the visual and functional core of the composition.

This Oxar spring lamp stands apart from the more commonly encountered chrome versions thanks to its original orange base, a particularly uncommon variation that is rarely found on the market. The vivid colour introduces a strong Pop influence while reinforcing the futuristic character of the design. The contrast between the reflective metal spiral and the saturated orange support gives the lamp a stronger visual identity than standard examples.

Beyond its sculptural appeal, the Oxar spring lamp incorporates an ingenious technical solution. The E27 bulb is not merely a light source but a structural component of the design itself. Once installed, it locks the spring into position and stabilises the entire assembly. This interaction between structure and illumination generates the spectacular radial light pattern projected onto surrounding surfaces, making the lamp as impressive when illuminated as when switched off.

Included in our Space Age Icons collection, this rare coloured version perfectly illustrates Philippe Rogier’s ability to merge innovative engineering, visual experimentation and functional lighting into a single collectible object. Discover more here:
