The ladybug wall lamp Lucinelle was designed by Jean-Pierre Vitrac for Co&Co in 1970s France. This less commonly encountered green and white version turns the familiar form of a ladybug into a playful yet remarkably sophisticated piece of functional lighting.
Its glossy green plastic shell is punctuated by large white spots, while the two independently movable wings reveal the softly glowing diffuser beneath. Opening or closing them alters both the silhouette of the lamp and the way light escapes from the body, making interaction an essential part of Vitrac’s design.
Lucinelle belongs to a period when plastics gave designers unprecedented freedom to experiment with colour, organic forms and humour. Vitrac takes that language further: the animal reference is not simply decorative, but becomes part of the lamp’s mechanism. Closed, Lucinelle reads almost as a sculptural object; illuminated and open, its form is transformed by light.
