The Gino Sarfatti 600/G lamp, designed for Arteluce in 1966, is a distinctive example of Italian modernist lighting. Its deceptively simple construction combines a cylindrical black lacquered metal body with a weighted spherical base covered in leatherette, transforming a practical table lamp into an ingenious study of balance and movement.
Unlike conventional adjustable lamps, the 600/G does not rely on articulated arms or mechanical joints. Instead, its weighted base allows the lamp to be repositioned freely, directing light by changing the angle at which the spherical element rests on the supporting surface. This intuitive approach to adjustment reflects Sarfatti’s interest in combining technical innovation with essential geometric forms.
The contrast between the tactile leatherette surface and the rigid black lacquered metal body is central to the design. The exposed light bulb completes the composition, emphasizing the lamp’s functional construction rather than concealing its source of illumination. Its minimal silhouette gives the lamp a distinctive sculptural presence.
The 600/G illustrates the experimental approach to lighting that made Gino Sarfatti one of the most influential figures in twentieth-century Italian design. Through a minimal number of components, the lamp achieves both visual clarity and remarkable versatility, making it suitable for desks, bedside tables and contemporary interiors.
