DESIGN CONTEXT

The Guzzini Fazzoletto vase by Luigi Massoni is a distinctive expression of 1970s Italian plastic design, transforming a rigid industrial material into an object that appears fluid, spontaneous and almost weightless. Inspired by the movement of a folded handkerchief, its undulating silhouette creates a sculptural composition that changes continuously according to the viewing angle.

Made from translucent amber PMMA, this example reveals the remarkable expressive possibilities of acrylic. The warm cognac-brown tones deepen where the material overlaps, while thinner sections allow light to pass through, creating subtle variations in transparency, reflection and color. The result is a particularly rich visual effect that emphasizes the vase’s flowing geometry.

The Fazzoletto design explores the contrast between the rigidity of its material and the apparent softness of its form. Its irregular rim rises and folds into a series of sweeping curves, suggesting movement captured in a solid object. Although conceived as a functional vase, its expressive silhouette gives it an independent sculptural presence.

The design is also documented in L’Utopie du tout plastique, a reference dedicated to the experimental culture of plastic design that emerged during the period. Its recognizable folded silhouette and expressive use of transparency have contributed to its appeal among collectors of Italian modernist and Space Age objects.

This amber example retains its original manufacturer’s label and is preserved in excellent vintage condition, with scattered surface marks consistent with age and use. Its warm translucent color makes it particularly effective in interiors featuring natural materials, polished metal, glass or contrasting vintage plastics.

Equally compelling as a functional vessel or a standalone decorative sculpture, the Fazzoletto brings together the playful experimentation of 1970s design and the visual sophistication of a carefully considered form.
