DESIGN CONTEXT

This Space Age eclipse lamp was produced in Italy during the 1960s and reflects the period’s fascination with compact forms, mechanical interaction and controlled light. Constructed entirely in metal, its cylindrical white body is enclosed by a deep blue domed outer shade, creating a striking two-tone composition.

The most distinctive element is the rotating blue shell. Its large asymmetrical opening can be repositioned around the internal light source, progressively revealing or concealing the bulb and changing both the direction and intensity of the illumination. The resulting eclipse effect makes movement an integral part of the design rather than simply an adjustment mechanism.

A series of small perforations around the upper section allows additional points of light to escape through the blue metal surface. When illuminated, these details become particularly visible and add another layer to the relationship between the solid outer shell and the light contained within it.

Despite its compact dimensions, the lamp has a substantial construction. A cast iron disc concealed within the base provides stability, while the painted metal body gives the object a distinctly architectural quality. The saturated blue outer shell contrasts beautifully with the warm light and off-white central cylinder.

Preserved in good vintage condition, the lamp shows only small marks and traces of use consistent with age. The cable and inline switch remain original, while the plug was most likely replaced at some point in its history. At only 21 cm high, it is a particularly characterful example of experimental Italian Space Age lighting from the 1960s.
