Designed by Ezio Didone for Valenti in 1968, Gancio transforms the familiar wall hook into a remarkably compact exercise in geometry. Valenti itself records the design among the furniture accessories introduced in 1968, during the company’s expansion into industrial design and its collaborations with a new generation of Italian designers.
Each hook is constructed from black painted metal folded into a shallow architectural structure. Three narrow projections along the lower edge provide separate hanging points, while the upper section extends forward before terminating in a broad semicircular element. The contrast between straight folded planes and the single curved form gives Gancio its distinctive graphic identity.
The design is particularly effective because its visual character emerges directly from its function. Rather than disguising the bends, edges and projections required to hold clothing and accessories, Didone turns them into the defining elements of the object. Seen from the front, the almost abstract composition of rectangles, vertical lines and semicircles gives the hook a strong presence even when nothing is hanging from it.
Compact at only 10.5 cm high, Gancio can accommodate coats, scarves, bags or smaller accessories while occupying very little wall space. Used as a pair, the repeated geometry creates an especially striking wall composition and reveals the modular quality of the design.
This pair is particularly appealing because the hooks have never been used and both retain their original period boxes, clearly printed “Gancio – Design: E. Didone”. Light rippling and halos to the painted surfaces are present from age and storage, while the cardboard packaging shows expected wear and losses. Together they form an unusually complete surviving set of this lesser-known 1968 Valenti design.
