Designed by Liisi Beckmann and produced by Gabbianelli during the 1960s, this ceramic piece reflects the sculptural approach that characterized much of Beckmann’s work across furniture, ceramics, and industrial design. Born in Finland and active in Italy, Beckmann developed a distinctive visual language based on fluid forms, organic silhouettes, and a subtle balance between functionality and artistic expression.
This object can be used either as a vase or as a candle holder, an ambiguity that was intentionally embraced by many designers of the period. Rather than separating decorative and functional roles, mid-century design often sought to integrate them into a single sculptural form capable of adapting to different domestic settings.
The elongated profile and gently flowing curves create a sense of movement despite the solidity of the ceramic material. The soft blue glaze enhances the sculptural quality of the piece, emphasizing its contours through light reflections and subtle tonal variations. Gabbianelli was particularly known for producing ceramics that combined artistic experimentation with refined craftsmanship, collaborating with some of the most innovative designers active in Italy during the post-war decades.
Today, pieces designed by Liisi Beckmann for Gabbianelli are increasingly appreciated by collectors of Italian modern design for their distinctive forms, versatility, and strong decorative presence. This example captures the spirit of the period, where everyday objects were conceived not only as functional tools but also as sculptural elements capable of enriching interior spaces.
