Designed by Vico Magistretti in 1966 and produced by Artemide from 1968 to 1979, the Artemide Telegono lamp is one of the most distinctive examples of Italian plastic lighting from the period. Its sculptural construction explores the interaction between color, geometry and light through a compact yet remarkably expressive form.
The design is built around a large opalescent hemispherical diffuser set within the molded body. The diffuser can be rotated to modify both the direction and character of the light, progressively revealing or concealing its luminous surface and transforming the appearance of the lamp itself. Magistretti exploited the possibilities of modern plastics, combining a self-supporting melamine body with an opalescent PMMA diffuser.
This red version has an especially striking presence, with the saturated shell creating a dramatic contrast against the illuminated white diffuser. Particularly distinctive is the integrated compartment tray built directly into the base. Divided into separate sections for pens and small desk objects, it reinforces Telegono’s identity as a true desk lamp, combining illumination and everyday organization within a single sculptural object.
This example also retains its original wiring and electrical components, an especially desirable detail for a design of this age. With its substantial 40 cm height and unmistakable silhouette, Telegono remains a remarkable expression of Magistretti’s approach to functional objects: practical, innovative and visually powerful.
