DESIGN CONTEXT

The Fazzoletto vase by Luigi Massoni for Guzzini is one of the most distinctive expressions of 1970s Italian plastic design. Inspired by the fluid movement of a folded handkerchief, its apparently spontaneous form transforms rigid PMMA into an object that appears soft, weightless and in motion.

This rare large version amplifies the sculptural character of the design. At approximately 27 cm high, it has a dramatically different presence from the more commonly encountered smaller examples. The translucent ruby red PMMA further emphasizes its sweeping folds, creating shifting layers of colour and reflections as light passes through the material.

Massoni’s design captures the experimental spirit that made plastic a defining material of Italian interiors during the Space Age era. Rather than concealing its synthetic nature, the Fazzoletto celebrates it. Transparency, saturated colour and industrial production become integral elements of the object’s visual identity.

The design is documented in L’Utopie du tout plastique, an important reference on the extraordinary culture of plastic design that emerged during the 1960s and 1970s. Today, the Fazzoletto remains a highly recognizable example of the period and an appealing collectible for enthusiasts of Guzzini, Luigi Massoni and radical Italian plastic design.

With its unusual scale and intense ruby red colour, this large example works as much as a sculptural object as a functional vase. Its fluid silhouette changes continuously according to the viewing angle, giving the piece a particularly strong presence in both vintage and contemporary interiors.

A smaller version of Luigi Massoni’s Fazzoletto vase, in translucent light grey PMMA, is also available in our collection. Discover the smaller Guzzini Fazzoletto vase here.
