The kartell componibili designed by Anna Castelli Ferrieri in the 1960s represents one of the most recognizable modular storage concepts ever produced by Kartell. Developed during the period when Italian designers were exploring the full potential of ABS plastic, the system combined industrial production with flexible domestic functionality.
This example is the square Kartell Componibili model 4970, an increasingly rare version of the modular storage system that is no longer in production. Its compact cubic proportions distinguish it from the cylindrical variants that later became more widely distributed.
The present unit consists of two modules with one matching top and a set of original wheels, forming a compact rolling cabinet that can function as a bedside table, storage unit or small mobile container. The recessed openings and rounded edges create the distinctive visual identity that defines the Componibili series.
Anna Castelli Ferrieri’s work for Kartell played a key role in shaping the language of Italian plastic furniture. By combining modular construction with durable ABS production, the design allowed multiple configurations while maintaining a clear architectural form.
Another configuration of the same system is documented in this Kartell Componibili set, where four modules can be arranged in different compositions depending on the space.
