The Magis TOTO trolley, designed by Berti & Bressan in 1976, holds a distinctive place in the history of Italian furniture design. Introduced as the first product by Magis, it established the company’s early interest in transforming everyday functional objects through innovative materials, playful geometry and adaptable construction.
This example comes in a striking yellow finish. Its saturated colour accentuates the clean rectangular volumes, while the contrasting black details and metallic central column reinforce its graphic, almost architectural character.
At the heart of the design is an ingenious telescopic mechanism. The central metal column allows the upper compartment to be raised, transforming the compact trolley into a two-level storage unit with a maximum height of 74 cm. When lowered, the two sections come together to create a compact, cube-like form that occupies very little space.
This versatility makes the TOTO particularly appealing. It can serve as a mobile bar cart, an occasional side table, an adjustable storage trolley or a practical companion in a living room, studio or home office. The lower compartment provides additional storage, while the caster wheels allow the piece to move easily between different spaces.
Beyond its practical qualities, the TOTO reflects the experimental spirit of Italian design during the 1970s. At a time when plastic was becoming increasingly important in furniture production, Berti & Bressan combined industrial materials with an adaptable structure that challenged the traditional distinction between furniture and domestic accessories.
