DESIGN CONTEXT

This Space Age design stool was created by Olaf von Bohr for Gedy in Italy during the 1960s, a period when plastics were transforming both the appearance and function of everyday domestic objects.

Built from high-density plastic, the stool reduces its structure to a compact composition of geometric volumes. Four substantial legs support a rectangular seat, while the glossy white finish reinforces the clean, almost architectural character of the design. Beneath the apparent simplicity lies a clever functional detail: the hinged seat opens to reveal a concealed storage compartment.

This integration of furniture and storage reflects the experimental approach that made plastic so important to postwar Italian design. Lightweight, resistant and suitable for moulding into precise forms, the material allowed designers to reconsider familiar objects without relying on traditional furniture construction.

Original markings for both Olaf von Bohr and Gedy remain beneath the seat, confirming the object’s authorship and manufacture. Compact, functional and distinctly sculptural, the stool is an appealing example of the optimistic domestic design language that anticipated the full development of the Space Age aesthetic.
