The ladybug wall lamp Lucinelle was designed by Jean-Pierre Vitrac for Co&Co in 1970s France. Playful yet carefully resolved, it transforms the familiar shape of a ladybug into an ingenious piece of functional lighting.
Its glossy red plastic shell is punctuated by oversized black spots. The two wings can be moved independently, revealing the softly glowing white diffuser beneath. This simple gesture changes both the silhouette of the lamp and the way light escapes from it, making interaction an integral part of the design.
Lucinelle belongs to a period when plastics gave designers new freedom to explore colour, organic forms and humour. Vitrac pushed this language beyond decoration: here, the animal reference becomes the mechanism itself. Closed, the lamp reads almost as a sculptural object. Open, it comes alive through light.
