This exceptional pair of chrome Space Age table lamps from the 1970s captures the experimental spirit of an era fascinated by futuristic geometries, reflective surfaces and the possibility of transforming light through movement.
Each lamp is composed of a polished chrome sphere resting on a substantial cylindrical pedestal. The composition is reduced to two pure geometric volumes, creating a sculptural object with a remarkably strong visual identity. Their mirrored surfaces reflect the surrounding environment, allowing the lamps to interact continuously with the colors, shapes and textures of an interior.
The most distinctive feature is the rotating inner shade, which moves across the light source to produce an adjustable eclipse effect. By changing the position of the shade, the user can progressively reveal or conceal the light, shifting between more direct illumination and a softer, partially screened glow. This simple yet ingenious mechanism makes the lamps both functional lighting objects and kinetic sculptures.
The design belongs to the broader exploration of spherical lighting that defined much of the Space Age movement during the 1960s and 1970s. Chrome was particularly suited to this visual language: its reflective finish emphasized the futuristic character of domestic objects while introducing an almost architectural relationship between the lamp and its surroundings.
Presented together, the two lamps create a compelling dialogue between symmetry and movement. Their adjustable shades can be positioned independently, producing complementary or contrasting configurations. This versatility makes the pair particularly effective on a long sideboard, a pair of bedside tables or within a carefully composed modernist interior.
Despite their compact dimensions, the lamps have a remarkably substantial construction, each weighing over 2.5 kg. This physical solidity reinforces their sculptural presence and distinguishes them from lighter decorative lighting of the same period.
A striking matching pair that combines the visual drama of mirrored chrome with the playful experimentation of 1970s Space Age lighting.
