These original Artemide Eclisse lamps were designed by Vico Magistretti in 1965 and produced in Italy during the 1970s. Among the most recognizable objects in Italian lighting design, Eclisse transforms a simple spherical form into an ingenious mechanism for controlling light.
The design consists of a rounded metal body containing a rotating inner shade. By moving this internal element, the light can be progressively revealed or concealed, recreating the visual effect of an eclipse. The interaction is intuitive and playful, combining functional illumination with a distinctive sculptural presence.
This pair brings together two original vintage examples in slightly different colors: one red and the other orange. Their contrasting tones create a lively composition while preserving the characteristic silhouette of Magistretti’s design. Both lamps retain the original manufacturer and designer markings beneath their bases, identifying the Eclisse model by Artemide Milano.
Designed for use on a tabletop or mounted on a wall, Eclisse reflects the inventive approach to domestic lighting that characterized Italian design during the 1960s and 1970s. Its compact dimensions, rounded geometry and adjustable illumination have made it an enduring design classic, recognized with the Compasso d’Oro in 1967.
