This 1970s chrome table lamp embodies the fascination with spherical forms, reflective surfaces and transformable light that characterized Space Age lighting during the period.
Its architecture is strikingly simple: a polished metal sphere rests on a substantial cylindrical base, creating a sculptural composition built from pure geometric volumes. The mirrored chrome surface reflects its surroundings, visually dissolving the solidity of the object and reinforcing its futuristic character.
The defining feature is its rotating inner shade, which moves across the light source to create a progressive eclipse effect. From a narrow crescent to a broader pool of light, the mechanism allows the illumination to be adjusted while continuously transforming the appearance of the lamp.
Generously proportioned at 22 cm high and notably heavy, the lamp has a particularly substantial presence for a compact table light. Even switched off, the dark inner shade contrasting with the reflective chrome sphere gives it a strong graphic quality.
The lamp has been cleaned and polished while retaining visible signs of age and wear to the chrome finish. A crack is present on the upper side of the spherical shade. The lampholder has some rotational movement but remains functional; the switch and plug have been replaced.
