The Jean-Pierre Vitrac ladybug lamps known as Lucinelle were designed for Co&Co in 1970s France, turning one of nature’s most familiar forms into an ingenious piece of interactive lighting. This exceptional pair brings together the classic red and black version with a striking green and white variation, creating an unusually expressive dialogue between two examples of the same design.
Each lamp is formed around a rounded plastic shell whose two spotted wings move independently. As the wings open, they reveal the glowing white diffuser beneath, changing both the silhouette of the object and the direction and intensity of the escaping light. Closed, each Lucinelle reads almost as a compact sculpture; illuminated and opened, the insect form seems to come alive.
The design perfectly captures the experimental freedom of 1970s plastics, when colour, humour and organic forms entered the domestic landscape. Yet Vitrac’s idea goes beyond playful styling: the ladybug itself becomes the operating principle of the lamp.
Designed for both wall and tabletop use, this red and green pair is a particularly collectible expression of French Space Age lighting, made even more compelling by the contrasting colourways.
