This rare Space Age ceramic lamp by BI-ELLE captures an expressive moment in 1970s Italian lighting design, when traditional materials were reinterpreted through new geometries and an increasingly interactive approach to light.
Its compact body combines a cylindrical base with a spherical upper section, both formed in ceramic and finished in a rich olive green glaze. Inside, a contrasting white metal hemisphere can be rotated to expose or partially conceal the bulb. A simple gesture changes the direction and intensity of the illumination, transforming the lamp from a direct light source into a softer atmospheric glow.
The principle belongs to the period’s fascination with adjustable and eclipsed light. Here, however, the futuristic geometry of Space Age design meets the tactile character of glazed ceramic, giving the object an unusual material presence.
The original Ceramica d’Arte BI-ELLE label survives on the base, together with the original wiring and inline switch. Beautifully preserved, the lamp is a distinctive example of BI-ELLE’s Italian ceramic lighting and a compact expression of the experimental spirit of the era.
