DESIGN CONTEXT

This vintage brass horse sculpture is an unusual example of Italian artisanal decorative production from the second half of the 20th century. Cast in solid brass and weighing over 2.7 kg, the object has a remarkable physical presence despite its relatively compact proportions.

The horse is rendered in a deliberately expressive rather than naturalistic manner. Its elongated body, folded legs and strongly modelled head create an almost abstract silhouette, while irregularities in the surface reveal the character of the casting and hand finishing.

Its most intriguing quality is its versatility. Standing upright, the substantial weight and flat profile allow it to function as a sculptural bookend. Turned horizontally, the curved body creates a generous recessed surface that can be used as a valet or trinket tray. It is equally convincing simply displayed as a decorative sculpture.

The brass has been left with its naturally developed patina, producing deep brown and almost black areas against warmer golden highlights. These variations accentuate its modelling and give the surface considerable depth and character.
