A rare 1967 Sakura tea set by Makio Hasuike for Ceramica Franco Pozzi. A brick red design icon that reinterprets the classic tea service with sculptural forms and a smart, handleless grip. An award winning collectible in excellent condition.
Designed in 1967 by Makio Hasuike for Ceramica Franco Pozzi, the Sakura tea set is one of the most celebrated Italian ceramic designs of the period. Winner of the 2nd prize at the MACEF Milano Award, it embodies a radical and poetic reinterpretation of the classic tea or coffee service.
The distinctive brick red vitreous china, the square based geometry and the sculptural proportions immediately reveal the experimental mindset of late 1960s industrial design. Yet the most innovative detail lies in the cups themselves: instead of a traditional handle, Hasuike created a diaphragm that divides the volume into two symmetrical parts. The liquid fills and warms only the upper chamber, while the lower section remains cool to the touch and features two subtle grooves for a comfortable, intuitive grip.
This complete Sakura tea set includes six cups with saucers, a teapot, creamer and lidded sugar bowl. All pieces are in excellent vintage condition, showing only light superficial scratches and tiny original firing marks typical of handcrafted ceramic production.
A rare opportunity to own an icon of Italian design history and a standout example of Makio Hasuike’s forward looking approach. The Sakura tea set adds warmth, character and a touch of Space Age refinement to any interior or collector’s shelf.
