The IO mirror designed by Giuseppe Raimondi for ABACO is one of the most intelligent and visually striking examples of Italian conceptual design from the 1970s.
Built around the simple word “io” — “I” in Italian — the piece transforms typography into function. Reflection becomes part of the concept itself: the observer literally completes the object through their own mirrored image. The result is both graphic and philosophical, playful yet rigorous.
Its composition is remarkably pure. Large rounded letterforms emerge from a smoked glass surface with a balance that feels almost architectural. The contrast between the dark reflective background and the mirrored typography creates a bold visual rhythm while maintaining an understated elegance.
More than a decorative mirror, this is a typographic object with sculptural presence — a piece capable of interacting with the surrounding space as both artwork and design element. Leaned against a wall or installed formally, it introduces depth, reflection and graphic tension into the interior.
Highly collectible and increasingly difficult to source, the IO typographic mirror represents a rare intersection between radical Italian design, visual communication and functional object design.
