DESIGN CONTEXT

Designed by Adriano Rampoldi for Europhon in Italy during the 1970s, this Europhon Space Age radio lamp brings together lighting, sound and sculptural form in a single compact object. Its rounded cylindrical silhouette reflects the experimental approach to domestic electronics that characterized Italian design during the Space Age era.

The lamp combines a softly rounded ivory diffuser with a beige lower body, separated by a polished chrome-finished band. This restrained color combination gives the object a particularly elegant appearance, allowing its proportions and materials to take center stage. The translucent upper section provides ambient illumination with two intensity settings.

Integrated into the lower section is an AM radio, operated through a series of small controls positioned along the front. The combination of radio and lighting transforms an everyday household appliance into a multifunctional design object, expressing the technological optimism and playful experimentation of the 1970s.

The model is also documented in the design reference book Utopie du tout plastique, reflecting its place within the history of European plastic design and the development of innovative domestic objects.

This example retains its original manufacturer label, although considerably worn. Both lighting settings work, as do the radio controls and volume adjustment, while AM reception is currently limited. The lamp is in very good overall vintage condition, with scratches primarily affecting the central chrome-finished band and a small crack beside the central opening. The body shows no deformation.
