This striking pair of chrome tubular wall sconces captures the architectural elegance of 1970s modernist lighting. Defined by slender cylindrical volumes, polished metal surfaces and a carefully balanced asymmetrical composition, the design transforms a functional wall light into a sculptural presence.
Each sconce features two vertical chrome-plated tubes arranged at different heights, connected by a compact geometric mounting structure. The staggered composition introduces a sense of rhythm and movement, while the reflective metal surfaces emphasize the purity of the cylindrical forms.
The upper sections are completed by elongated frosted bulbs, which soften the light and create a subtle contrast with the polished chrome below. When illuminated, the sconces acquire a warm, atmospheric quality, with the diffused light highlighting the reflective surfaces and the vertical proportions of the design.
The composition recalls the distinctive visual language associated with Gaetano Sciolari’s lighting: geometric clarity, metallic finishes and a balance between decorative impact and architectural restraint. These wall sconces are attributed to Sciolari on stylistic grounds, although the designer and manufacturer of these particular examples have not been independently confirmed.
During the 1970s, chrome became a defining material in modernist interiors. Its reflective qualities allowed lighting designers to create objects that interacted dynamically with their surroundings, while tubular forms offered an elegant alternative to more elaborate decorative lighting. The technological aesthetic associated with Space Age design also informed this broader experimentation with metal, light and geometry.
These wall sconces demonstrate that approach through a remarkably restrained composition. Rather than relying on complex ornamentation, their character emerges from the relationship between proportion, asymmetry, reflection and light. Displayed together, they create a cohesive architectural arrangement suitable for a hallway, living room or bedroom.
With their slender silhouettes, polished chrome finish and sculptural presence, these vintage tubular wall lights offer an elegant interpretation of 1970s modernist lighting, combining collectible appeal with a timeless architectural aesthetic.
