The Gaetano Sciolari Toy lamp, designed in 1968 and manufactured by Ecolight Milano, is a distinctive example of Italian lighting design from the late 1960s. Combining playful geometry with practical versatility, the Toy reflects the period’s experimentation with compact forms, adjustable lighting and modern industrial materials.
The design is built around two contrasting elements: a rectangular cream-colored base with an integrated switch and a spherical white-painted metal shade. The globe can be rotated and angled to direct the light, creating different configurations while preserving the lamp’s characteristic rounded silhouette.
One of the Toy’s most interesting features is its versatility. Originally conceived as a wall lamp, it can also be positioned on a bedside table or other horizontal surface. This dual functionality makes it particularly suitable for smaller spaces, where a single object can provide both focused illumination and a decorative accent.
Designed by Gaetano Sciolari in 1968, the Toy was manufactured by Ecolight, a lighting brand associated with the Milanese company Valenti. The model was also distributed by Metalarte in Spain and produced in several colors. Its compact proportions, geometric construction and adjustable shade place it within the experimental vocabulary of Italian modernism and early Space Age design.
This example retains its original Ecolight Milano (Italy) manufacturer’s label inside the shade, together with its original electrical components and integrated switch. The lamp is fully functional and preserved in very good vintage condition, with scattered surface marks and signs of age consistent with use.
