DESIGN CONTEXT

This Murano glass table lamp from the 1980s is distinguished by the unusual relationship between its pure sculptural form and highly expressive surface decoration. A softly rounded oval diffuser in frosted glass rests directly above a low circular metal base, reducing the lamp to two elementary volumes.

Across the satin surface of the glass, a sweeping etched spiral develops into a fluid composition of lines and irregular textures. The decoration gives the otherwise restrained diffuser a remarkable sense of movement, recalling natural phenomena such as wind, flowing water or atmospheric currents.

The effect becomes particularly compelling when the lamp is illuminated. Warm light diffuses through the frosted glass while the etched decoration catches and interrupts the glow, revealing different depths and transparencies across the surface. The spiral consequently becomes an active part of the illumination rather than a purely decorative motif.

This expressive treatment of the glass belongs naturally within the broader tradition of Murano experimentation, where surface, transparency and light become integral elements of the object. Here, the organic character of the etched decoration is balanced by the simplicity of the oval diffuser and the restrained geometry of the circular base.

The metal base has developed a warm natural patina that complements the softness of the illuminated glass. Preserved in excellent vintage condition and retaining its original wiring, the lamp works equally well as atmospheric lighting and as a sculptural art glass object when switched off.
