The vintage lipstick mirror is one of the most distinctive expressions of the playful approach to plastic that transformed Italian domestic design during the 1970s. Rather than treating the mirror as a purely functional object, its elongated conical body turns it into a small freestanding sculpture.
Made from white molded plastic, the design is defined by an exceptionally simple silhouette: a narrow base rises into a tall, gently tapering form, while the mirror follows the profile of the body and can be tilted to adjust the viewing angle. Seen from the side, the relationship between the solid plastic structure and the thin reflective surface becomes particularly graphic.
The form belongs to the wider family of so-called Lipstick or Unghia mirrors that became associated with Italian Space Age interiors during the period. Its combination of glossy plastic, compact dimensions and an almost abstract geometry reflects the experimentation with new materials and everyday objects that characterized 1970s design.
Elegant yet playful, it works equally well as a functional vanity mirror or as a sculptural accent on a dressing table, console or shelf.
