DESIGN CONTEXT

This unusual vintage floor ashtray reflects the increasingly playful approach to domestic objects that emerged during the 1960s. Rather than relying on the substantial pedestal construction commonly associated with floor-standing ashtrays, the piece is reduced to a remarkably light tripod structure. Three slender chromed metal rods terminate in bright red spherical feet, while a matching red sphere crowns the elongated central stem.

At the centre, a shallow glossy black glazed ceramic bowl introduces visual weight and a striking contrast of materials. Particularly interesting is the construction itself: the metal elements are elegantly screwed directly into the ceramic body, making the assembly an integral part of the design rather than something concealed.

The combination of chrome, black ceramic, saturated red accents and geometric spheres gives the piece a playful, almost Space Age character. It remains in excellent vintage condition, with traces of oxidation to the metal parts and only minimal signs to the ceramic, with an impressed mark present underneath.
